In this latest exhibition, Cathy Drummond continues to draw our attention to shops, flats and buildings in our local communities – shapes and structures which we are all aware of - to a greater or lesser extent - but due to busy daily routines, perhaps we don’t quite find the time to stop and fully contemplate.
These new paintings allow the viewer some time to slow down and acknowledge the intricacies of our commonly shared built environment – the communal spaces of flats and apartments, the exciting diversity of endangered local “high-street” shopping strips and the many lives, lived within – all of this is handled with an inquiring eye and a fluent understanding of materials.
These paintings are about Melbourne – but importantly, they are also very much concerned with the possibilities of paint.
